History of the Children’s Institute

The Children's Institute was established in 2001 as a multi-disciplinary research institute to “promote effective development of policies and interventions” that respond to key challenges and realise the rights of all children in South Africa. Today, the Institute is recognised as a leader in child policy research and advocacy, and our activities remain focussed on key challenges to the well-being of South Africa's children: poverty and inequality, child mortality and morbidity, violence and abuse, and limited voice.
