The Children's Institute has long contributed to the evidence base on child poverty dynamics and the role of social assistance, with a strong focus on South Africa's Child Support Grant – the state's primary programme for reducing child poverty. We are regularly approached by government, development partners and civil society for expert analysis and technical support in social assistance policy development.
Our work within this thematic area includes:
- Restoring the value of the Child Support Grant to the food poverty line
- Addressing systemic barriers to social assistance by ensuring early birth registration for infants and unlocking accessible services for the late registration of births
- Providing legal services, including strategic litigation, for ‘invisible children’ to be able to access social grants while awaiting birth registration
