Violence against children is widespread with 1 in 3 children reporting some form of maltreatment, yet the child protection system is dysfunctional and very few children receive protection and therapeutic services. Reform of child protection is further hampered by a lack of evidence about the specific services needed and how they best operate. We have therefore focused on building an evidence base to establish the nature and causes of violence against children in South Africa, to evaluate therapeutic programmes, and to inform strategic advocacy to improve laws, policies and practice.
