About the first seminar

In January 2014, Prof Crain Soudien presented a keynote address at the Healthy Cities for Children Colloquium hosted by the Children’s Institute and the African Centre for Cities. His paper, Fictions of Childhood: Cape Town's Children in Our Literature, raised some controversial claims that couldn’t be discussed in the limited time allocated for audience responses.

Soudien’s paper will be used as a springboard for other papers and discussion at the Contesting representations of children and youth in South African social science, fiction, film, drama and popular media seminar series.

The opening seminar runs for three hours to give us time to introduce the series and for an in-depth discussion of some of the main themes. We envisage two presentations per seminar and will, as far as possible, try to pair up presenters who are working on similar topics. Let us know if you are interested in presenting.
